In the first part of the book Mart[ac]in-Barbero reviews the evolution of such conceptions as public opinion and mass culture. He brings out the importance of the recent rediscovery of 'the people' and 'popular culture' as a cultural force and places them within a general theory of hegemony. By considering how mass media relate to the texture of everyday life, Mart[ac]in-Barbero outlines a definition of the nation as a field of rich contradictions and develops the idea of 'mediations' as a basis for understanding the play between resistance and seductions in the formation of cultural identities.
